SCORING
Union, Ky., beat Bethel, Tenn., 84-55 in an NAIA game. Bethel had 854 yards of total offense, 509 rushing. … Georgia Tech had 477 yards rushing, the fifth-best total in school history and the top total in an Atlantic Coast Conference game, in a 33-21 win over Virginia. … Utah scored its most points since beating Wyoming 69-14 in 1983 with a 68-27 win over Iowa State.
STREAKS
Wisconsin kept Paul Bunyan's Axe for seven straight years after beating Minnesota 41-23. … TCU posted consecutive shutouts for the first time in 55 years with its 45-0 win over Wyoming. The Horned Frogs beat Colorado State 27-0 the week before. … Bethune-Cookman has won its first five games to start the season for the fifth time in its 85-year history after beating Delaware State 47-24. … North Carolina beat Clemson for the first time since 2001 with a 21-16 victory in Chapel Hill. … Appalachian State has won 23 straight Southern Conference games after holding off Elon 34-31. … Nortre Dame's David Ruffer has made 16 straight field goals the past seasons after hitting three in a 23-17 win over Pittsburgh.
FALLING TIDE
Alabama's 19-game winning streak is over.
No. 19 South Carolina took down the top-ranked Tide 35-21 in Columbia, the defending national champions' first loss since being beat by Utah in the Sugar Bowl after the 2008 season.
Marcus Lattimore scored three times and the Gamecocks held Alabama's Mark Ingram and Trent Richardson to 64 yards rushing for their first win over a No. 1 team in four tries.
South Carolina also shredded the country's top-rated scoring defense, putting up the most points on Alabama since a 41-34 loss to LSU in 2007.
(REAL) OLD SCHOOL HOMECOMING
When The College of Wooster (Ohio) (cq) got stuck without a homecoming game because its opponent, Earlham, changed conferences, the Fighting Scots came up an idea for spending the day that wasn't just old school, it was old country.
The college staged a cricket match between the school's club team and a team from the Wooster community. About 1,000 fans turned out to see the college beat the town, 143-141.
PENN STATE'S INJURIES
Penn State's injury woes just got worse.
The Nittany Lions lost two more starters to potentially serious injuries in the first quarter of a 33-13 loss to Illinois when defensive end Eric Latimore hurt his left wrist and safety Nick Sukay injured his pectoral muscle.
Another starting end, Pete Massaro, left because of dehydration and the Nittany Lions were forced to use freshman DaQuan Jones at end with Jack Crawford already shelved for the game because of a right foot injury suffered in practice.
ANOTHER TAR HEEL OUT
North Carolina held out fullback Devon Ramsay against Clemson due to the ongoing NCAA investigation into the football program.
That's 11 players out due to a probe of improper benefits as well as possible academic misconduct.
The school also said senior safety Jonathan Smith, who has been held out of every game, won't play this year. The status of Ramsay and eight other players remains in question, while cornerback Kendric Burney is suspended two more games because of improper benefits connected to several trips.
BARNER INJURED
Oregon backup running back Kenjon Barner was taken away in an ambulance after being injured on a first-quarter kickoff return against Washington State.
Barner was tended to on the field for nearly 10 minutes and medics brought out a backboard, but he eventually sat up and walked with assistance very slowly to a stretcher.
Barner was hurt when he was hit by Washington State's Anthony Carpenter and fumbled.
The school announced during the second half that Barner was in stable condition.
Oregon also lost quarterback Darron Thomas with an apparent shoulder injury. He ran back to the locker room in the second quarter and after coming back out to the sideline never re-entered the game.
DANTONIO BACK
Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio was back in the stadium to see No. 17 Michigan State beat rival and No. 18 Michigan 34-17.
Dantonio had missed the previous two games due to a mild heart attack and a blood clot. He coached from the press box and watched the Spartans bottle up Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson to win three straight over the Wolverines for the first time since 1965-67.
Robinson was 17 of 29 for 215 yards and accounted for two touchdowns, but made the three costly turnovers and ran for a season-low 86 yards on 21 carries.
QUOTABLE
"I gave myself a game ball for that one." South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier, who took sole possession of second place on the career SEC victories list with a 35-21 win against No. 1 Alabama. Spurrier has 107 victories, one more than Mississippi great Johnny Vaught. Alabama's Paul "Bear" Bryant is the all-time leader with 159 league wins.
