After Dylan Sumner-Gardner’s recent dismissal from the Boise State football team, we reached out to the former four-star recruit to get his thoughts on how he was treated at Boise State, Bryan Harsin as a head coach, and what his plans are now regarding his football career.
For the purposes of protecting DSG from being misquoted or taken out of context we have decided to post the interviewer's questions and DSG’s answers in their entirety.
Interviewer: Do you think you were treated fairly by the coaching staff here at Boise State?
DSG: I was treated more than fair by the Boise State coaching staff they gave me chance after chance and opportunity after opportunity but as a young man who thought I had the world figured out I failed to capitalize on these chances and opportunities
Interviewer: What do you think of Bryan Harsin as a head coach?
DSG: I can't speak for all of the players because we all have on own perception of people but Harsin is a great man who wants his players to be the best version of themselves on the field and off the field. He has been around a lot of great coaches and coaching staffs so he knows what he talking about. It's easy for a kid 17-21 to come in and think they have the master plan or the cheat codes to life that will make everything easy but Coach Harsin is passionate about what he does and will do his best to help his players come to the realization that in order to be successful in life, you must put in Blue Collar hard ass work day in and day out. I don't think bad about Harsin at all, there were times where I should've been off the team but Harsin cared so much he gave me opportunity after opportunity, but again I thought I had the world figured out and thought I was going everything was going to be given to me, and I had to learn the hard way that, that's not the way life work. Everything in life is earned.
Interviewer: What is your plan now for your future in football?
DSG: My plan now it to continue to recover from shoulder surgery and if another coach would like to give me a shot to play for his football team I would greatly appreciate It. I love the game of football it has been a part of my life for so long and I have been through so much to get to this point, I would do anything to play again no matter where it's at.
At this point the interview was ended. Dylan was understandably a little sick from his medication he was taking. Blue-Turf appreciates Dylan taking the time to answer some questions and clear the air.
Whether DSG gets another shot in college football remains to be seen, but he seems to have taken responsibility for his mistakes at Boise State, and is approaching his future with a responsible, mature attitude. If that approach continues, DSG’s undeniable talent will result in a second chance, one would think.
