BOISE, Idaho – Boise State head baseball coach Gary Van Tol announced 30 road games for the 2020 season, Wednesday, completing the Broncos’ first schedule in 40 years.
In addition to 12 Mountain West games, the schedule’s highlights include three-game series at Texas (Feb. 21-23) and Creighton (March 27-29). The Longhorns have made the most appearances (36) in the history of the College World Series and the Bluejays play their home games at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Neb., the annual site of the CWS.
The series at Texas will mark the beginning of the 2020 season. The Broncos previously announced a game at Washington, Feb. 25 as their season opener, but a conflict for the Huskies resulted in that game being removed from Boise State’s schedule.
“In a series of historic events leading up to our first game in 40 years, we are thrilled to have the opportunity to play a team with the rich history of Texas,” Van Tol said. “Some Power Five schools shied away from us because we don’t have an RPI, but (Texas) coach (David) Pierce was willing to give us a shot. This is bigger than just a three-game series. This is monumental for Boise State baseball and Bronco Nation. Plus, it gives three Texans on our roster a chance to go back home and see their family and friends, which will be pretty special.”
Van Tol added, “The goal of every college baseball program is to play in Omaha in June. Our trip in March to play Creighton will give our players a special opportunity to play at TD Ameritrade Park, home of the College World Series. It will give our first-year program an early taste of where we want to be at the end of the season. (Creighton) coach (Ed) Servais was one of the first calls I made when I started to put our 2020 schedule together. Not only did he give us the opportunity to come to Omaha, but he was gracious enough to accept an invitation to a play a three-game series at our place in 2021, which will be awesome for our local fan base.”
The Broncos will play a four-game series at Utah Valley (March 13-15) during its first of two trips to Utah. Boise State travels to California three times next spring beginning with a three-game set at UC Davis (March 21-23) and a single game at Santa Clara (March 24).
The first Mountain West series is scheduled for April 3-5 at Air Force. Boise State will be away from home for a seven-game stretch when it takes on BYU (April 13), Utah (April 14), travels to Fresno State for a conference series (April 17-19) and visits Washington State for a pair of contests (April 21-22).
The final-two road series will take place in Mountain West action at New Mexico (May 1-3) and San Jose State (May 8-10).
The top-four teams in the Mountain West qualify for the conference tournament, scheduled for May 21-24 at San Diego State.
With the announcement of the road games, Boise State’s 56-game schedule is complete. The 26-game home slate begins Friday, Feb. 28 when Boise State hosts Northern Colorado in the opener of a four-game series. The teams will meet for a doubleheader Feb. 29 and conclude their series with a single game, March 1.
