Bennett in action
The nation's top kicker always hoped he'd get a chance to play in an All-American game.
Billy Bennett, the San Diego (Calif.) Torrey Pines prospect, will finally accomplish that personal goal when he takes the field for the West team in the Offense-Defense All-American Bowl on Jan. 4.
"It's a dream come true for me to play in that game," he said. "Ever since I've been watching All-American games on television, I wanted to play in one. That was my goal to play on TV, and I think the concept of East vs. West is so cool. There's always the argument whether Florida, Texas or California is better and this is a chance to put that to rest.
The game, which will be televised on ESPNU, will allow the kicker to represent Torrey Pines along with his future destination - Boston College.
"I don't think I have anything to prove to myself," he said. "I just want to represent my high school and Boston College and hopefully do my best to get the job done for the West."
Bennett hopes to take advantage of the opportunity to talk to a few recruits about the Eagles in hopes of swaying them to Chestnut Hill.
"I haven't seen all the players invited yet, but if there are any big-time guys interested in going to Boston College I'll take my chance to talk to them," he said. "I'm just going to tell them how amazing of a school Boston College is. They are up and coming and had an amazing year this season and this was supposed to be a rebuilding year. I'll also talk about how great of a place it is to be."
The three-star prospect has put up another strong effort this year.
"I'm six of eight with a long of 44 yards," he said. "Our offense is scoring a lot more this year and that hasn't allowed me to get that many long attempts. I'm also hitting 95 percent on touchbacks and have hit all but two of my extra points. One was blocked and the other slipped as we played through a hurricane up in Pennsylvania."
