Freshmen Notebook: To redshirt or not to redshirt

Into the fire for the freshmen, especially at tight end

Three positions will likely keep the Seminole coaches nervous all season. At offensive line, defensive tackle and tight end there simply isn't much depth or experience.

As a result, true freshmen will be counted on at all three positions to provide an immediate contribution. Unlike last year when all but two members of the class redshirted, it's a good bet that over half the 2008 signees will see the field this season. So it's not a surprise that the Seminole coaching staff is anxious to get the newly arrived rookies in shape as quickly as possible.

"The first week they (freshmen) had to do through some testing, did some 110s (conditioning run) and a base conditioning test," strength and conditioning coach Todd Stroud said. "As we progress next week we'll look at the position needs we have obviously offensive line, tight end and defensive tackle, and some of the ends. We'll probably get the volume tuned up a little bit more so than the rest of the class. But when you look at it across the board some of the receivers are probably going to have to be in a position where they are going to have to help us.... This whole class better be ready to play so we are going to turn the screws up a little tighter as things progress."
