Sun Devils make push for Nick Wood with offer

Poway, Calif., defensive tackle Nick Wood has put together an outstanding spring, elevating his status as one of the top linemen the west first by putting together a strong showing Nike Combine at USC, and later by picking up Pac-10 scholarship offers from Washington State, and more recently, Arizona State.

The Sun Devils got an up close and personal look at Wood in their recent one-day camp and were so impressed that they felt it necessary to make a near-immediate scholarship offer. It was a move that was understandable, considering the 6-foot-2, 272-pound Wood was coming off one of the most impressive NIKE Combine testing performances of any player this year.

His SPARQ rating of 85.05 was extraordinarily high for a linemen, and ranked fifth among all players at the event. Wood put up an unbelievable 50 reps of 185 pounds on the benchpress, the highest mark of the year at any Nike Combine thus far, and his shuttle run of 4.7 seconds was an amazing .21 seconds faster than his next closest competitor among fellow defensive tackles. He also finished second among all defensive tackles in the 40-yard dash (5.23 seconds) and vertical jump (27 inches).
