Ukwuachu looking for an offer
Pearland's Samuel Ukwuachu was one of the talented linebackers in attendance at Texas A&M's one-day camp on Sunday. But his situation was a bit different; playing a position he had never spent time at before.
Despite being a novice at outside linebacker, Ukwuachu showed off his athleticism and impressive lateral movement, which complemented his 6-foot-5, 203-pound frame well.
"I played outside linebacker for the first time," Ukwuachu said. "It was good getting some one-on-one time with coach (Nick) Toth, learning the position and working out in space like that.
"I think my skill set translates well, when it comes to me being in space. I think I did what I'm best at. I think I did well against some really good athletes. I spent most of my time at strong side linebacker. I got myself a pick 6, so that was good."
Not only is coach Toth his position coach, he is also his area recruiting, allowing the two to develop a strong relationship that could eventually play a big role in Ukwuachu's decision.
"Me and coach Toth have a good relationship," he said. "We have talked a lot and he is the one that invited me up for the camp."
After the camp, Ukwuachu spoke with A&M coaches and is set to make a big call today, which could be the make or break moment in Ukwuachu's recruitment. If an offer is going to come, it would likely happen during this phone call.
"They just told me to call them on Tuesday so we can talk about the recruiting process and about where I stand with them," Ukwuachu said. "I hope they offer. I like the school. I have been up there a bunch of times and I could see myself playing there. I could see myself playing for coach Toth and coach (Mike) Sherman. It's such a good program up there and I would love to get an offer."
With offers flooding his mailbox over the past month, Ukwuachu's options are increasing by the day.
"Since the end of last month to the beginning of June I gotten like 5 offers," he said. "I am up to 12 offers now. I'm not sure what they all are because I don't have my list with me now. It is amazing how everything just started coming in at once."
If A&M does offer, they would retain their position at the top of Ukwuachu's list, but that does not mean an immediate offer from the Pearland athlete.
"My top school is A&M, my second is Boise State, my third is Illinois and my fourth is probably Arkansas," Ukwuachu said. "If A&M offers I don't think I would commit on the spot. I'm still getting offers right now and I am just taking it all in. Only time will tell."
